Monique (Mo) George is a Campaign Strategist at The Clean Slate Initiative, supporting state campaigns on the Programs team.

Prior to joining CSI, Mo was a Senior Program Officer with the Campaigns and Advocacy program, City Initiative team, at Open Society Foundations (OSF), which is dedicated to addressing racial injustice and other critical issues in cities such as New York, Atlanta, and Philadelphia.

She is also the co-founder of Workers 4 Racial Equity/W4, which launched in 2016 to address racial equity for black workers and connect the work on expending affordable housing with issues of access to quality jobs.

Mo has over 30 years of social justice organizing experience, which began in college, where she worked locally with NYPIRG on various environmental matters. Upon graduation, Mo worked with SEIU Local 1199 for over ten years. After moving on from SEIU 1199, Mo held positions such as Membership Director with Empire State Pride Agenda as part of the team that won marriage equality in New York State. Mo then moved on to Director of Public Housing at Community Voices Heard (CVH), where, during her tenure, members won over a billion dollars for the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA).

Mo’s extensive background also includes serving as the Executive Director of Picture the Homeless (PTH), and during her time, PTH won the passage of its long-fought Housing Not Warehousing Act (two city-wide legislations), released the impactful Business of Homelessness report, and successfully launched the #Freetopee campaign that addresses bathroom access for all. That work has led the Department of Transportation to expand the placement of additional Automatic Portable Toilets across New York and expand bathroom access across the subway system from 20 to over 45.

Mo’s organizing work has led her from meetings at the White House with various Presidents and staff to becoming a Professional Fellow trainer with the U.S. Department of State through their work with the Greater Lakes Consortium out of Toledo, Ohio. As a Professional Fellow, Mo works across Eastern Europe in places such as Hungary, Romania, Bulgaria, and others, training on community organizing, power building, and creating movement moments.

Mo holds her Bachelor’s degree in Black Studies from the State University of New York, College at New Paltz, and her Master’s in Public Administration (MPA) from Metropolitan College NYC. When not working to change the world, she can be found reading a good book, traveling the world she works to save, or just trying to get some sleep.
