About CSI
The Clean Slate Initiative has a small office in Orlando, Florida, where our Chief Executive Officer and several operations staff members are based — but most of our team works remotely, based all over the country. Not being tied to one location allows us to draw from a national talent pool and hire people who live in the many communities in which we work. Our entire staff gathers in Orlando four times a year to set priorities, collaborate, and build community.
Because we believe that everyone deserves a second chance, we value lived experience and hold ourselves accountable for hiring, promoting, and building the next generation of directly impacted leaders and leaders of color. 89% of our staff are directly impacted by having a personal experience with the criminal legal system ourselves or through a close family member or loved one.
More than half of our staff are people of color. The Clean Slate Initiative is rapidly growing. Any open positions are posted below, and we anticipate opening more roles in the future. If you don’t see an open position that fits your talents and interests now, please complete a candidate profile at the bottom of this page, or check back here often for newly-opened positions.
Mission
The Clean Slate Initiative passes and implements laws that automatically clear eligible records for people who have completed their sentence and remained crime-free, and expands who is eligible for clearance.
Vision
People will no longer be defined by their records and will have the opportunity to contribute to their community, have a fair opportunity to work, get an education, and achieve their full potential.
Our Internal Values
Our values are rooted in the American Dream - the belief that if you work hard, you should be able to get ahead and provide for your family. Those values are seeped in our work culture, too.
- We lift up the whole person. This means we acknowledge, without judgment, people’s lives outside work, their pasts and their dreams for their future. We celebrate moments of happiness and pride and we honor moments of hardship and defeat. We intentionally uplift the experiences of our directly impacted and BIPOC colleagues.
- We don’t bring our egos to work. We come to work understanding that everyone is here because we believe in accomplishing real change for millions of people and to do that we must all work together. Our shared goals are more important than individual recognition or fame.
- We have a relentless drive to achieve our mission. We keep top of mind the people who need the relief Clean Slate legislation provides. These are our family, our friends, ourselves.
- We are always learning and improving. We know our goals are ambitious and haven’t been achieved before. We observe our work and the work of others so that we can scale the best approaches. We practice taking a critical look at our work so we can move forward having learned from what we did previously and with the fresh perspective of new staff.
- We demonstrate curiosity. When something is unfamiliar or different than we might expect, we ask, and encourage, questions to learn. We apply this to people and ideas.
- We believe that time together builds relationships. We have hard conversations in person. We plan together. We spend informal time together, laughing and finding joy.
- We set meaningful goals and we each come to work every day with a clear understanding of what we will do to move closer to our goals. We have practices that help us set these goals and share them across the organization.
- We recognize our interdependence. We recognize that achieving the change we want to see requires all of our talents. We allocate time to identify how we share work across people and teams.

FAQs About Our Hiring Process
Your profile will be created in our application tracking system (ATS) and your application to a specific role will be recorded in the ATS. The recruiter who is assigned to manage the recruitment for the open position will review your responses to the basic qualification questions, your resume and the skills you bring to the role we are trying to fill. You can expect to receive a reply from the recruiter about the status of your application that aligns with the timeline set for the recruitment.
Log in to your candidate profile. Your candidate profile will be linked to all the roles you have applied to. In the submittals tab, you will be able to view the status of your application for each of the positions you applied to.
Your candidate profile will be saved in the ATS. Recruiters will routinely check our candidate database for qualified candidates for positions we recruit for. We will notify you if a position opens that we believe match your qualifications.
We suggest that you email us your request to be removed from consideration or from our candidate database entirely by sending an email to careers@cleanslateinitiative.org. We will be providing candidates a response once the request is completed.
Our recruitment process is approximately 12-weeks long. The duration for each search will vary based on factors such as: the strength of the applicant pool, number of candidates that have applied, the assessments involved, interviews, reference checks, etc.
Screening call: the recruiter will be assessing your suitability for the role and will be asking questions that relate to your qualifications, work experience and skills that closely aligns with the role being filled.
Hiring Manager Interview: this is an informal meet and greet with the Hiring Manager, confirming the information that was gathered by the recruiter. It is also an opportunity for you to ask specific questions about what the day-to-day is like, the challenges for the role, etc.
Panel Interview: this is a structured interview process designed to assess your suitability for the role using behavioral-based interviewing techniques. The panel interview may involve presenting your at-home assignment.
CEO interview: this is an informal meet and greet with our courageous leader, Sheena Meade. This is a practice we incorporate into the hiring process because we recognize the importance and impact in meeting the leader of our organization. This is also the space where you may ask our CEO questions.
The recruiter will inform you of any at-home assignments that need to be completed prior to the panel interviews.
The reference check process asks the finalist to provide at least 3 professional references for CSI to contact. Preferably, a supervisor, a peer, direct report (someone reporting/reported to you, if applicable), or coworker.
No, the reference checks will not involve a background check, only professional references. This is intentional because we truly believe that records do not define people. It is their character, what they can do and what they can accomplish that matters.
We completely understand! We have been in your shoes, and it is completely normal to feel all kinds of emotions during interviews. We have seen candidates feel nervous, excited/high energy, eager, anxious and low energy. Whatever it is you are feeling, verbalize it. This way, an awareness is set. Our panel is adept at reading cues and behaviors during interviews. We encourage interviewees to let us know during the interview if they need to take a deep breath or a sip of water.
To center the safety and well-being of its employees, including applicants, and in accordance with relevant federal, state, and local laws, The Clean Slate Initiative provides equal employment opportunities to qualified individuals with disabilities to participate in the recruitment and selection process. If you require accommodation to participate in the interview/hiring process, please contact the Director of Talent & Culture at sshikhmuradova@cleanslateinitiative.org.
