Unlocking Opportunity with Research & Data

Bridging the Gap with Data-Driven Solutions
  • Funding the Evidence: We fuel rigorous research projects with clear, practical applications. These studies are illuminating real-world consequences of Clean Slate policies, paving the way for optimal implementation.
  • Data that Empowers: Our one of a kind data model dives deep into potential policy impacts, predicting outcomes and maximizing positive change.
  • Focusing on Equity: We prioritize research that analyzes how Clean Slate policies can actively address the legacy of mass incarceration and its disparate impact on communities of color, ensuring everyone has the opportunity for a clean slate and a second chance.

Data is more than numbers; it can be a blueprint for a better future. By harnessing its power, we equip policymakers with the information they need to craft effective solutions and empower individuals with a fresh start. Join us in this data-driven journey towards a more just and equitable world.

Our Methodology & Data Products

We have developed a methodology to estimate how many adults are impacted by a record, both in states and nationwide. Our data model is the first of its kind, giving researchers, lawmakers, advocates, and the public the ability to estimate the individual-level impacts of Clean Slate laws broken down by race, ethnicity, sex, and types of records. We use state and federal data sources and apply recidivism, deportation, mortality, and inter-state mobility rates to ensure our estimates account for dynamic population trends.

We use our data model to examine the impacts of our policies, allowing us to take into account waiting periods and the types of records eligible for Clean Slate automatic clearance and to determine what the impacts of our policies are on racial equity.

Our Data Dashboard

The CSI Data Dashboard presents population estimates for people in the U.S. who are impacted by arrest or conviction records, with data further broken down by race, ethnicity, sex, and type of record, within each state and over time.

State Data Factsheets

Our methodology allows us to create projections related to Clean Slate policies, including estimating the impact that a proposed Clean Slate policy might have in a particular state. To begin highlighting those impact statements, we’re releasing a series of data factsheets specific to states that can help aid advocacy, insight, messaging, and more.

As our research develops, we will release additional factsheets. Here are the impact statements for the following states:

CSI’s Research and Advisory Committee

In the Fall of 2023, The Clean Slate Initiative convened a distinguished group of researchers, experts, and stakeholders from across the field to serve as our Research Advisory Committee. The purpose of this group was to advise on the content and scope of our research RFP released in early 2024. Since their formation, the committee has played a pivotal role in guiding our research initiatives, ensuring that our projects address the needs of individuals and communities impacted by records.

The Research Advisory Committee is composed of individuals who are leaders in their fields, bringing together a wealth of knowledge, expertise, and a shared commitment to advancing research that can lead to meaningful and sustainable change. The ongoing insights of the Committee have been invaluable in shaping the direction of our research agenda and enhancing the impact of our work.

Below are the bios of the Research Advisory Committee members who have generously shared their perspectives, expertise, and time. We also thank additional members of the Committee whose bios are not listed here.
