Getting a criminal record was "the single worst thing that could have happened to me," says Thomas Barnes, who grew up in Detroit. Even though his arrest happened nearly 20 years ago, it continued to stop him from getting good jobs or helping out as a coach for his kids' sports teams. But Michigan's new Clean Slate laws changed everything, opening up doors of opportunity to him.
