Closing Out 2023: A Look Back with Our 2023 Annual Report

There is a quote that says: “Only look back to see how far you’ve come.”

There is no better illustration of this sentiment than when I reflect on the progress of The Clean Slate Initiative (CSI). When I joined this project in 2020, our efforts were underway in just a handful of states; fast forward to today, and being able to say that we are now active in 24 states is surreal!

This year alone, we’ve accomplished so much:

  • We received a $75 million commitment catalyzed by The Audacious Project;

  • We are heading into 2024 operating as a sustainable, stand-alone organization;

  • We’ve been able to provide technical assistance, strategic guidance, and communications resources to our partners;

  • We saw two states (MN & NY) pass Clean Slate policies this year; and

  • We witnessed an unprecedented one million people receive automatic record clearance on the first day of Michigan’s Clean Slate implementation.

Our team put together this year’s annual report to provide our donors, supporters, allies, and partners with a comprehensive and interactive overview of the work we tackled in 2023. Please check it out by visiting our website’s annual report page at cleanslateinitiative.org/2023-annual-report.

As I reflect upon CSI’s evolution, I feel grateful that I get to do this rewarding work in community with dedicated partners, funders, supporters, and teammates. As 2023 comes to a close, I remain encouraged, confident, and excited about what’s to come.
