Clean Slate Initiative Condemns Racism, White Supremacy and Bigotry in all Forms, Denounces Hateful Ideology

Failure to confront racism and demand accountability allows bigotry to fester and spread

Oct. 14, 2020 – The Clean Slate Initiative (CSI) today released a statement condemning racism, white supremacy and bigotry and denounced those who seek to advance hate-based ideology.

“White supremacy, racism and bigotry in all its forms must be unequivocally and irrevocably denounced by local, state and national leaders at every turn.

“At the Clean Slate Initiative we confront first hand the lasting and pervasive vestiges of racism and white supremacy within our justice system through the mass incarceration of Black and Brown individuals and the over-policing of communities of color. That is why we work to clear criminal records —through remedies such as expungement or sealing—to pave the way for a second chance by removing barriers to employment, housing, education, health insurance, and more.

“Political discourse must refrain from incendiary, divisive rhetoric and repudiate hate, racism and white supremacy. Failure to confront racism and demand accountability allows bigotry to fester and spread not only within our government and justice system but throughout our community,” said Sheena Meade, Clean Slate Initiative Managing Director.

The Clean Slate Initiative is a bipartisan national movement to automate the clearing of criminal records that block second chances for tens of millions of Americans. Following decades of overcriminalization, between 70 million and 100 million Americans have some type of criminal record—nearly half of all children in America have a parent with a record. In the digital era, with nearly 9 in 10 employers now using criminal background checks, any criminal record—no matter how old or minor—can be a life sentence to poverty.
