Clean Slate Initiative Celebrates Passage of Michigan’s Automated Criminal Record Expungement Legislation
Today, the Clean Slate Initiative (CSI), a national bipartisan movement to automatically clear criminal records and ensure second chances for tens of millions of Americans across the country, lauds the Michigan state legislature’s passage of a groundbreaking Clean Slate package.
Thank you to everyone who joined Clean Slate Initiative’s Managing Director, Sheena Meade, for two panels addressing the need for mass record clearing, how the Clean Slate Initiative came to be, and the widespread momentum Clean Slate policies across the country, in red, blue and purple states, as we celebrated National Expungement Week 2020.
As we advocate for solutions that shift resources away from over-policing and mass incarceration, we must also repair past harms as a way to build a better future together.
Pennsylvania's Clean Slate Act has now become a kind of national model as more than half a dozen states including Utah, North Carolina and Louisiana have started moving toward automated expungement of criminal records.
